1. Poor Product Application
Solution: Allow more time for styling, just 5 minutes more! Use a timer. If you don't thoroughly work the product through your hair on wash day, you're not going to get good second-day or third-day curls. Once your hair starts frizzing, it may be too late if the product wasn't worked well into the curls initially. If you did apply the product thoroughly, you can often revive your curls by rewetting them and gently fluffing.
2. The Weather
Solution: Use a stronger hold product if you see bad weather on the horizon or the season is changing and humidity is increasing. It's rare to use the same product combination year-round and have curl success.
3. You're Waking Up Frizzy
Solution: Switch to a silk pillowcase. If you want curl control, place your hair in a low ponytail. If your hair is short, use a silk bonnet. Placing curls in a loose ponytail on top of your head (pineapple!) will preserve the curl for the next day.
4. Over Drying With a Diffuser
Solution: Stop diffusing when your hair is about 90% dry. Allow your hair to air dry and leave a little product cast. Focus the heat underneath the curls instead of on the top layer. This helps prevent flyaways and frizz.
5. Over Drying With a Microfiber Towel
Solution: A microfiber towel is great, but being too aggressive while removing water can still cause frizz. Apply products to soaking wet curls, then gently squeeze and hold the towel in place to absorb excess water.
Drying Challenge: Only squeeze your curls three times with the microfiber towel, then let the rest air dry. Do this every wash for the next two weeks and see if your frizz improves.
6. You're Three Months Past Your Last Trim
Solution: Split ends continue traveling up the hair shaft, causing more damage. The longer you wait, the more you'll need cut off. Stay on a 3-4 month maintenance trimming schedule.
7. You Feel Compelled To Brush Your Curls Before The Shower
Solution: NO! Curly hair should only be detangled while wet and coated with conditioner. Use hot water and your fingers or wide tooth comb to loosen products and knots.
Note: This is a common cause of frizz, especially in children. It often appears as a halo of frizz and stringy ends. Trim damaged ends and teach everyone caring for the hair when and how to brush curls.
8. Damage
Solution: Deep condition for 20 minutes twice a week. If the ends are not softer and more elastic after two weeks, your curls may be beyond repair. The only solution is to cut off the damaged curls. Sorry!
9. Crunchy Protein Curls
Solution: Too much of a good thing isn't good. Read your product labels! If words like "strength", "repair", or "protein" are everywhere on the products you use regularly, it can cause your hair to become hard, rough and crunchy over time. If that's happening, move then to the back of the cabinet and do a conditioning treatment.
10. Inconsistent Curl Pattern
Solution: Be mindful of the type of oils and butters you're using! Yes, they feel make your hair feel soft, but oils naturally resist water and shea butter blocks much of it. Oily coatings can prevent conditioner from penetrating the hair. That can cause buildup and frizz. The fix is to use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove buildup, then follow with aconditioning treatment.
If you're still battling frizz after all of this, BOOK AN APPOINTMENT WITH CAS ASAP!
